Love this breakdown of this great song! First time I've watched one of Beato's videos. Frankly I couldn't imagine the band members issuing the copyright strike, and we know Ben and Rick are gone. It's disconnected corporate bean pushers who literally bite the hands that feed them. Please keep doing what your doing!

Great song choice. Very much agree about the guitar solo comments. Didn’t know it was 3rds. Another great Elliot solo is in Shake it Up. That guy could pinpoint such groovey melodies. A virtuoso.

Rick, I just realized you are approx 58 years old. I'm 70 now but was playing that song in a club called Mom's Saloon in San Diego back in 78 with our band "Knocker"... You dated yourself when you stated your age in 1978. We did a great rendition back then. I played drums & sang the lead...but I digress. Still have a live recording of it. One Question... How are you able to acquire individual tracks of these songs? Thanks for the memories...!!

The CARS song JUST WHAT I NEEDED is just what I needed (to hear). I prefer BENJAMIN ORR'S singing over RIC OCASEK even though RIC wrote the songs. Sad that BEN died from pancreatic cancer so young. He was only 53 years old at his death. The keyboard player is really great too. I think his name is GREG HAWKES.

Elliot Easton is one SICKO player... his playing is always right on the money, on time and oh sooooo tastey. because of the pop-style song construction, his solos had to fit neatly into small spaces. there are NO throwaway notes. his accompanyment guitar playing - embellishing on the chunking rhythm of Ric Ocasic - is every bit as concise and delish as the work he does when he steps out front to rip one of his iconic solos. Rick - PLEASE!!!!!! - bring Elliot on to one of your episodes/shows to talk guitar.

Great dissection, as usual! Rick, take a listen to one of the best albums ever produced - by Procol Harum - "A Salty Dog" ---every song on that album is worthy of a video, especially the title track, as well as "Too Much Sea Between Us", "Boredom", "The Devil Came from Kansas" "The Wreck of the Hesperus" and "Crucifixion Lane."

Hey Rick . Brought a copy of The Cars , The Cars from a hairdressing salon who sold records in the side in Morrinsville , Waikato , North Island , New Zealand in 1978. Some 10,000 miles from Minnesota, USA . I was blown away by this gem of an album. Age 15 at the time . I read an article in Rolling Stone , that mentioned that the guitarist, Elliot Eastern was a left hander. I have wondered , since that article if , being a south paw would in any way influence or change how you sound or play . Perhaps , a subject for a video “ Left Handed guitarists/ Bassists who changed rock n roll. As far as drummers are concerned you can’t go past Ringo Star . His magical fills on Come Together and Something in the way she moves where played by a lefty on a right handed kit . I of course am happy to be corrected . I am in awe of your channel. I am so he same age as you pretty much , and despite the huge distance apart that we live , I feel I have experienced much of your musical journey in a lounge room far far away . Keep doin what you are doing . Many thanks .

Such great production of a killer performance. Thank you for this breakdown Rick. Like a lot of the "What Makes This Song Great" episodes, I already am intimate with the tune you are breaking down, but I always notice parts that I hadn't before. On "Just What I Needed" it was the Wurlitzer. Never noticed that - so cool. Thanks again man! Keep it up!

Thank you for this. I can remember being eightish years old when this album showed up in my house, and I wound up internalizing just about every track on there. This song was more influential on my own songwriting than I'd originally realized, but your breakdown isolated some things that I was definitely influenced by on a track I did about a decade ago, called Out of Time. I always hated my production results, but I think I was chasing RTB without realizing it. I hope to better myself on the next one. ~Lee

Did any band combine the sounds of synthesizer and guitar as well as The Cars? And damn, after Elvis, was there any guy in rock n roll who looked as good as Benjamin Orr? And Ric Ocasek was the king of 2/3-word catch phrases turned pop hits: Good times roll; Let's go; Shake it up; You might think; It's magic

I watch these for Rick's air drumming. :D Seriously, I love this series. This channel has taught me so much about songwriting and theory. I love that, after a lifetime of studying music at the highest level and recording/performing with the highest-profile musicians, you still have the enthusiasm of a teenager. Your genuine love for everything music doesn't ever seem to fade, and your outlook isn't jaded after years in the biz. It's like you're a kid with a secret they can't wait to share. Thank you for always being entertaining while teaching us.

No words for how much I enjoy your channel. Also, you're right, the major 3 chord makes this song. SO many songs today refuse to stray from a key or change modes. I think Rick and Ben would have enjoyed this, I hope they haunt the person at UMG that hit you with the strike.
