I think that heart break anniversary is a better song than what Rick things. I really like the groove and the vocals. Not every song needs to change that much. This one is a nice slow jam.

If this man can keep his objectivity and call a song repetitive when it is without forcing himself into finding compliments in order not to please the possible fans, I will definitely subscribe. Has Charles CORNELL or Adam NEELY done the same video, they would have somehow explained how it’s still super brilliant for producers to throw two chords within a 4-minute song. Please keep it super honest like this.

Its true about #9 "Fiel". Its emphasis is on the percussive elements of the lyrics + vox and the implied story (harmonic content) of an almost non-existant bass. See "Low Rider" by War and "Rumble" by Link Wray for a polar example of the bass (low.... body....authority). The bass is obliterated in Rumble but the song is legendario.

Imogen heap was the forerunner, even a decade ago her voice modulations were in a different league. I feel that most of the hits use many vocal harmonies and ideas which she used long back. reference: listen to her song Hide and seek

This is just the way pop music is nowadays. It's the sound that sells. People are hooked on it, doesn't matter if it's incredibly simple and a bunch of rehashed songs. Definitely review alternative songs if you want variation and great artistry. Twenty one pilots is a great start but there's a lot of other great bands out there and even solo artists.

Leave the Door Open was by far my favorite and is already a classic afaic. I do however, think Montero got kind of a quick dismissal. Judging a tune solely by how interesting it's chord progression does a disservice to the other elements that make that song (and music in general) fun to listen to. Not saying it's a work of genius or anything, but those feel changes and the layered production go a long way towards the appeal. Well, that and all those pretty colors in the video.

Rick I love these vids. I wonder what you think about the idea that since we have the opportunity for more production these days, there doesn’t need to be as much a focus on the chords. I think Montero is a good example. I was surprised to find it was only two chords when playing it, because the production goes so many places.
Parthajeet Sarmah
Parthajeet Sarmah 2 күн мурун
Idk how much music should be about production and less about music itself, but you could be right. But I have always felt that music should not be judged by the production or who performs it. But many people do, so I think it is okay.
Randy singer
Randy singer 19 күн мурун
RICK you are a genius but you are being far too kind to these Pop tunes. I am a full-time musician and I have to play a lot of the songs but we both know the emperor is wearing no clothes. Instead of talking so much about the production I’m really surprised you don’t illustrate that the songwriting of today’s music is in the toilet design for fifth grader Mentality instead of the song writing that we grew up with with the Beatles, come on you can’t even compare even drivers license is unlistenable to me. Fortunately the one song by Bruno Mars was absolutely spectacular it blew my mind thank you for introducing me to it but these other mumbling train wrecks of songwriting make me just wanna throw up. This generation doesn’t know anything about writing songs, everyone is tone deaf these days it’s all about what you look like and the “rhythm” whatever the hell that means:) lollll. I believe we have reached a point of no return in our music song writing abilities, thanks for all you do
