studio musicians just never get enough props for what they do. i think toto (besides steely dan) is the first all studio musician "band". they've done nothing but crank out top notch music.

About the long fade-outs in songs... and about Toto.....There's that super-cool noodling guitar playing (by, I gather, either Fred Tackett or Louis Shelton) in the fade-out of the Boz Scaggs song "Lowdown" from the Silk Degrees LP, which had three of the to-be Toto members playing on it. I wonder what Steve L thinks about that... Ask him, Rick, and.. what do YOU think about that little gem?

I live near Cincinnati and the main rock station even says "we play rock from 80s 90s and now." its funny to me because of how rock has fallen off so much since the 90s in my view. Like how he says guitar isn't mainstream anymore.

As a visual artist (draftsman & painter) it is fascinating to hear the overlapping similarities between the industries. The days of artist development are gone and that is not a good thing for anyone, especially the audiences. I am not a worrier by nature but it definitely concerns me what happens to a society’s culture when there is no room for anything but consumerism.

at 13 mins, Lukather states that he'd like to hear what a band would be able to do with home recording techniques. There's a band from Australia called Psychedelic Porn Crumpets that records in a home studio. Amazing musicianship, recording and really good songs. NO SYNTHS. All great guitars.

The music industry is losing millions of dollars today, simply because they don't care about guitar in songs anymore, that's why people coming up learning guitar will end up buying all the old stuff, Steve is an absolute genius and someone to listen too again and again.😊👍

My all time, most influential musician I grew up listening too when I was just a kid. His guitar, sound and the band TOTO completely got me from the minute that I heard them. I am now 53 years old and I have followed Luke all of these years and he is the most humble, real and kind people of superstar status that and he doesn’t even try to own how amazing of a person, musician and his many, many contributions to the 1,000’s of records he was part of. Back in the 80’s I had no idea of all the artists he has worked with and recorded as a hired gun, and that without his work you would have never heard the song had he not participated. The most under rated musician, singer on the planet. I love this interview so much because I could tell that Steve truly respected Rick as someone who was asking “real” questions and by someone who in his own right has meant so much to music. Thank you for posting, Rick B.

This was one fantastic interview. I have so much respect for Steve. This is a man who through hard work and determination, earned every one of his stripes. These one take wonders today who lay one track then auto tune themselves have no idea how to play. To sit in a room and play with a band is how it needs to be. The humanness and little imperfections are what endear the music to our generation. To know that a real person sweated over that song. His mention of Greg Koch was awesome. I follow Greg at Wildwood Guitars... he is a hoot....

I went to a convinence store and i there was music playing through the radio..when the guitar solo came, i remember saying "huh, that sounds like Steve Lukather". I shazamed it, and googled the song. It turned out that it was actually him who was playing that solo. Now i know why he's a legend. His sound and touch are so distinctive, that even when i don't know the song, i still somehow knew that it was him.

Hey RICK! Great interview! I just discovered you. Steve collaborated with SIGGI SCHWARZ (The best European Guitar Man) with whom I recently wrote and produced an Album with called "The Fire Inside" (Late 70's/80's music) Perhaps you can give it a listen and evtl. give an interesting interview. He used to have an amazing Guitar/Amp shop that sold stuff to Aerosmith, Rammstein and many more. He also produced for Michael Schenker and opens for great bands like The Who, Foreigner, Mike and the Mechanics, Bryan Adams and many more. Ring him up. BTW I'm DAVE SCHAEFER. His Singer/Songwriter/Co-Producer ; )# LET'S ROCK!!!

Yes!! The “I Won’t Hold You Back” solo is so soaringly, achingly beautiful! Flawless vibrato and tone. It’s a must-hear solo from Steve. You must know it to know what he’s capable of. And as you demonstrated, the chords - who plays such chords now? Great, great interview, Rick. Absolute gold, here. Much appreciated.
