In this video I discuss how I have coped with my learning disability. I have always had tremendous difficulty with reading comprehension. This video is the story on how my Mom, Sports and Music were instrumental in helping me overcome it and go from being a D- student to becoming a college professor.

I went to a tech college (TRIED) as I went I got my school records , noticed in the beginning of report cards I had high grades across the board FOR THE FIRST MONTHS then I noticed my grades WOULD JUST DROP LIKE A STONE BAD 🤔🤔🤔 What happened.???? As I got older I noticed I had SAD I would literally stop functioning completely all I would do was want to sleep from November till first of Spring. Basically I WANTED TO HIBERNATE 😴😴😴😴😴😴😴 from 5th grade till when I dropped out in the 12 grade , my last year my teachers would put me in the back of the class I carried a small pillow in my gym bag . Wish something could have been done back then OH WELL I JUST KEEP MOVING ONE TO DAMN LATE TO CRY 😢 OVER IT . I do have my guitar 🎸 about 20 so I still have a chance to hit that ONE OF A KIND RIFF 🤩🤩 🏦🏦🏦🏦🏦🏦🏦

OMG! I have the same old Ovation. Pre electric...or at least not electric. Nearly threw it out, nearly gave it away but as my “leave it in the lounge room, doesn’t matter if it gets squashed” guitar, it has become one of my main practice axes. Nice story. (His mot mine)

Another entertaining and very relatable story re: your learning disability, as I went thru school with a similar story, with the added bonus of being a major stutterer. I eventually managed to control my stuttering to become an popular on-air radio personality later in my early 20's. I still do some voice-over today.

What do you mean coping with a disability? Every trial and tribulation you had you found something where you had ability. You found something you could do and you went after it. There's nothing quite like finding something you are good at it gives you something to do. When you find something rewarding it gives you something to work at. I wished I'd had a dollar guitar kicking around the house before I was in the seventh grade.(think of the non intimidation Factor) There have to be so many learning styles, when a teacher teaches in a style that you resonate with you can become on fire to learn. Rick, you probably remember where this lyric comes from: "Oh how happy you have made me yes oh how happy you have made me(oh how happy) !" Your KGglobal video clips are the greatest, all killer no filler.

Ok, maybe I'm just dense, but what disability are you referring to? I've listened to this video a couple times, and I don't think it was mentioned by name. I'm sure it has to do with reading, but there are a few reading disabilities. I'm not trying to be disrespectful, I just seem to be missing it.

Let me tell you something about teaching children with disabilities - they grow up. My wife teaches end of spectrum autistic high school kids in a school for autistics. The school goes from mild to her class. We spend over 2k a school year of our own money and she works about 25 hours a week at home to make their experience as best as she can make it. End of spectrum people have to take the same yearly (in our state) as other kids. It's a joke. My wife is 65 years old but she won't retire because she she says she won't abandon her students. We are failing our most vulnerable.

rick, thank you! i've suffered thru this phenomenon all my life. the difference is... i'm an only child. i, have what i would call an unorthodox memory. i love learning and have been literate since the first day i picked up a book. but reading has been a challenge. a challenge in that i have to read a book at least twice in order to fully comprehend and grasp the concept of what's on the pages. there was a time that i developed the ability to write backwards, read backwards and read upside down. i didn't realize that i learned differently than other kids. it wasn't until i was in my 30s that i realized that i was a visual learner, also. thanks, man for sharing your story.

The school system doesnt understand people outside their limited realm of appreciation. I also experienced great trouble, but I never quitted the arts, philosophy and my own passions. Now, I can be grateful of those terrible teachers, they taught me (by counterexample) that everyone has an unique potential, and I can spread that message 👍🏻

By thinking you have a clinical conditi9n such as a disability youre limiting yourself. We all learn differently there are no learning disabilities ( unless of course a disease is the cause ). If youre having trouble learning something youre not meant to go that path. Were all built differently. You can also have shitty memory but still learn. Memory does not equal intelligence either. Thats a social indoctrination because the ystem doesnt want people to learn they want people to memorize.

From a different era you came up. You learned values that so many are lacking now. We teach our kids that folding is easier than trying from a different angle. You found yourself in other places. When you were invisible in a classroom you found your voice elsewhere and are now fully seen. This video is everything. Thanks for transparency.

Thank you Rick. With your access to communicate to so many, you sharing this does a service for others. I struggled with speech when as a a second grader transferring from German to English. There were good teachers, but there were those who harmed, saying things like " are you stupid?" I became a successful Special Educator with empathy and understanding that all my students had abilities. This brought out the best in the most to exceed expectations. Educational psychology has come a long way and recognizes "individual" learning styles. Sadly like any other profession there are still some bad apples out there. Congrats on overcoming and sharing your experience.

Unbelievable story, I had to take notes every 20 pages when reading books so later I could glue everything together and tell what I red. I have been really good at remembering stuff though. I learned all Slayer lyrics when I started english classes as my second language (not very useful phrases when it comes to communication lol), I remember Bill Clinton speech in Ireland etc. What you said that the momorizing propels everything till today that is also true in my case.

I didn't learn how to read until I was about 27 when a nice lady traveling in the same fair circuit as I was (I was a traveling clown magician). At age 50, I retired teaching adults and children to read, and teaching teachers how to teach reading. I wouldn't say I was smarter than my teachers, but I was smarter and more inventive than many. I not only had difficulty reading text, I also had trouble sight reading notes, but I had a definite affinity for music. I am almost finished writing a (humorous) book about my struggles called "Confessions of an Illiterate." It was great listening to your story.

Hey Rick, great video. This one really stood out for me. I had almost a parallel life to yours with a few slight differences! We are 4 days apart in age (you're older), I was a horrible student because of ADHD and dyslexia, I was a great wrestler, and music is my complete passion. It wasn't until I found guitar and vocals and started playing in bands in the Seattle area in the 80's that I finally felt like I was a real person. I only wish I had a family that was as supportive as your's, thanks for sharing your story, it was very inspiring.

Fantastic video Rick. And talk about a pandemic!! This is everywhere, when unrecognized can lead some of us down wrong paths in life, or at least very long ones. Is also a hidden problem in some highly intelligent people, who can power over attention/learning deficits through sheer intelligence until the demands of life become overwhelming, or when assigned tasks where the gaps become painfully obvious. "Oh you can't possibly have that problem, you're too smart..." Believe me you can...undiagnosed here until well into my 50s

Hey Rick, watching this at 4 a.m. as I can't sleep. This sounds so familiar to me; i know a lot of things about a LOT of subjects as i have such an interest in a lot of things in life, yet I was so unbelievably crap at school (zoning out all the time whils reading LOL).Wasn't good at anything at school and no support there. Feeling so alone during my school years. Now I'm a graphic design studio manager and they call me a walking encyclopedia (Not bragging, I'm very humble) It took me a lot of years to realise that i AM good at something and really wish I had the support when I was a lot younger. I'm now really trying to support the good people of my graphic design team and focus on their individual qualities whatever they may be. Thank you Rick for posting this video (and all your video's). You are a rare human being - you are a treasure. You deserve all tbe credit!! Love you man. - Rodger, the Netherlands.

John Lennon had exactly the same issue when he was a student, except he didn't even have the benefit of having a mother who could tell him he wasn't an idiot. He wound up doing okay. The lesson to be learned is that everyone is good at something and the key is to just keep trying things until you find out what that is.
